Once long ago, when children had more freedom, I was walking home from Sunday School by myself when my path was blocked by a bigger and older boy.
“Don’t hit me,” I quavered, a tactical mistake.
He hit me and I went home crying.
“You should’ve hit him back,” said my parents, as usual forming a united front. “Why didn’t you?”
Even at the age of eight this struck me as hardline advice. But, over the years, I’ve repeatedly discovered the wisdom of standing up for myself. It’s worth getting a reputation as a bit of a nutter just to see the expression of outraged astonishment on the bully’s face.
