A good guitar can cost £8,000. I know this because last week a relative and her husband drove up from the South to commission one from a master guitar-maker in York.

My relative’s husband is a musician and, as far as we know, a very nice person. But it’s impossible to tell because my relative, originally from Wales, never stops talking. Everything she does is slightly excessive — like buying an uncontrollable Irish trotting horse on impulse in what she claimed later was a ‘swipe right’ moment, and running a Lake District ultra-marathon in storm conditions so bad the near-disaster hit the news.
