Fascinating take on an old tale, thanks for taking the time to bring it all together!

We're just down the road from Brayton Barff and I hadn't heard this specific folk tale before. If you ever find out the source I'd love to know more.

I wonder whether that tale ever existed outside that lady's family? In a way, it doesn't matter because that's how folktales work. People take elements of a familiar tale, like Wade and Bell, and create new versions out of it to suit themselves.

But if anyone else has heard that story obviously I'd be really interested too!
